Areas of expertise include:

Psychotherapy for volatile emotions, frequent relationship troubles and confusion about oneself

Dr. Maxwell specializes in treating chronically turbulent emotions, as well as difficulties relating comfortably and effectively to others. Sometimes these experiences go along with a feeling of not knowing who one is (e.g., “What is important to me? Who am I, really? What do I want to do in life?”), as well as making rash choices one often regrets. These experiences may or may not be related to abuse(s) and/or neglect experienced in one’s childhood and teenage years. Clinically, these experiences sometimes manifest as:

  • Personality disorders (e.g., borderline personality disorder)

  • Complex posttraumatic stress disorder

Psychotherapy for avoidance, anxiety and feelings of being “stuck”

Dr. Maxwell uses cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and other research-supported interventions to help clients curb excessive anxiety, combat procrastination and avoidance, disrupt depressive thinking patterns and reshape unhelpful routines, habits, and behaviors. Clinically, these experiences sometimes manifest as:

  • Depressive disorders

  • Anxiety disorders (e.g., panic disorder, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, health anxiety)

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder

  • Adjustment disorders

Assessment of psychopathology, personality and cognitive skills

Dr. Maxwell excels in assessment of personality-related and other psychopathology, as well as cognitive ability. He uses a multi-method assessment protocol to determine a best-fitting clinical profile, treatment plan, and/or set of recommendations depending on goals of assessment. He also offers preliminary screenings for neurocognitive deficits and referrals to neuropsychologists for further neuropsychological assessment.
